Why are Scented Candles so Expensive?
There is a reason why scented candles are so expensive in the market. It depends on the type of candle you are going to buy and its unique features. Let’s see some popular categories in this regard.
Most expensive scented candle categories
Wax
Usually, candles consist of a petroleum product called paraffin. Paraffin, along with forming an important part of candle wax, also contains chemicals that can potentially cause carcinogenic soot on burning with blackening the surrounding areas. Good quality candles are made of organic waxes that can be safely burned without any toxic effects. Waxes like beeswax, coconut wax, palm wax and even soy wax constitute the wax of authentic scented candles.
Beeswax is formed by honey that requires 6 pounds of honey for just one pound of wax. Similarly, soy and coconut wax are obtained from hard pressing their respective compounds. The process is tedious. These waxes are chemical-free with having an extended burn time. They also don't cause soot. But they are expensive, and that in turn makes the candles expensive as well.
Candleholder
Wax is necessary for a candle. But the candle jars holding the wax are equally important as well. Candleholders and containers for ages have formed a part of the decor of households. With time they have evolved as per the needs of the user. Candle containers come in various shapes, sizes and materials; all of them in some way or the other decide the final cost of the candle. Ceramic, Porcelain and glass are the popular choices. But different types of wood, ceramic, cast iron, and even brass are being successfully used as experimental containers these days.
After Mater, the shape and the size become the deciding factor. The aim is to make them eye-catching. And the prettier it looks, the pricier it gets. From plain cylindrical to embellished iron to crystal clear glass, each of them plays a role in deciding the cost of the scented candle.
Oil
Oils constitute an essential part of candle wax. They are crucial for imparting the characteristic scent of the candle and can be used in combination with the candle or on their own. There are two basic types of oils. Essential Oils and Fragrance Oils. While Fragrance oils are created in a laboratory, Essential Oils are extracted from natural sources like plants, roots, herbs and the bark of trees. The rarity of the plant and the conditions associated with growing and harvesting it make the scented candle expensive on being incorporated with the scent.
To take a simple example, around 120kgs of Lavender are used just for one kilo of lavender extract. Fragrance oils combine Essential oils with aroma chemicals to impart their smell. The uniqueness of the scent and the fragrance's rarity are important reasons why scented candles are so expensive.
The style quotient
The authenticity of a lot of best scented candles often comes from the fact that they are organic. Being labelled handmade further adds to their charm and quaintness and makes each piece a unique one. That said, a lot of effort goes into making handmade candles, especially scented ones. The whole process is lengthy and tedious, from collecting the natural wax to pouring the wax inside the containers. Bulk orders further add to the effort. That with the packaging of the candles post-production puts the price of the candles in the higher range.
Some candles even come with multiple wicks. This though directly not a factor, multiple wicks scented candles for their sheer uniqueness come at an increased price. Other factors like the quality of the wick with the reduced burning time play role. And a combination of these factors increases their popularity with making these candles pretty expensive.
Brand name
Brands are companies that have already made their name in the market through their quality. Many brands have started manufacturing best scented candles these days, with their sheer brand value increasing the price of the candles by ten notches. These companies go out of their way to make buying candles a luxurious experience. From gold embossed wax to vintage ceramics, these candles have it all. Some of these candles even hold world records as the most expensive candles in history.
These high-end candles have revolutionized the candle industry and given a new life to candles, providing livelihood to thousands of people associated with the industry. But this has also led to the rocketing of candle prices under their brand name.
